Fire Blood book reveals Rhaenyra’s fate

Fans of House of the Dragon know the show is set centuries before Game of Thrones, meaning its events are already documented in George R. R. Martin’s lore. That includes the fate of Rhaenyra Targaryen, whose death is one of the most brutal in A Song of Ice and Fire history.

Her end wasn’t quiet. According to Fire & Blood, the source material for the series, Rhaenyra is killed and eaten by her half-brother Aegon II’s dragon, Sunfyre. The scene is so graphic that one of her ladies-in-waiting gouges out her own eyes in response. The horror of the moment extends beyond the immediate violence, as the sheer brutality of the act leaves those who survive it traumatized.

Game of Thrones actually spoiled this years ago. In season 3, Joffrey Lannister casually recounts her death to Margaery Tyrell, noting that Sunfyre devoured Rhaenyra while her son watched. He even specifies that her remains are buried in the crypts beneath the Red Keep, adding a layer of macabre detail to his taunt. Later, in season 5, Shireen Baratheon summarizes the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between Rhaenyra and Aegon II that left the Targaryens permanently weakened. She explains how the conflict divided the area, pitting family against family and dragon against dragon, with devastating consequences for House Targaryen’s stability and reputation.

Rhaenyra does briefly claim the Iron Throne, but her reign is short-lived. Riots erupt in King’s Landing, fueled by the political instability and public unrest that her contested ascension provokes. After her supporter Princess Helaena, Aegon II’s sister-wife, dies by suicide—an event that further destabilizes the city—Rhaenyra flees to Dragonstone. There, she discovers her forces have been decimated: some have betrayed her, others have perished in battle, and those who remain are in no position to resist. Upon arriving, she confronts Aegon II with the cutting remark, “Dear brother. I had hoped that you were dead,” a line that shows the deep animosity between them.

As for when this happens on screen, the timeline suggests it won’t be soon. Rhaenyra still has to rule King’s Landing, handling the treacherous politics of the capital while facing open rebellion from her opponents. Meanwhile, Aegon II remains bedridden in the aftermath of his injuries, making it unlikely he could orchestrate her death in the immediate future. The show has adhered closely to the book’s pacing, so her demise will likely unfold in season 3 or later, once the narrative reaches the point where her reign collapses and she retreats to Dragonstone.
